Background

The Town and its partners are continuously assessing the physical space of Downtown to ensure a clean, safe and accessible place for all. The Downtown Work Plan prioritizes identifying sidewalk installations for relevance, repairs and replacements and reducing barriers for small businesses.

One component of these efforts is to monitor the Downtown streetscape and sidewalks for potential improvements by both the Town and businesses. With that in mind, the Town, UNC, and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership will continue past Spring Cleaning efforts with the Seasonal Cleaning Initiative.

Coordination and Goals

Coordinated by Downtown resident Doug Rothwell, walking audits will be conducted of specific blocks of Downtown streets in spring and fall. The result will be lists of opportunities including maintenance, replacements, removals or additions for both the Town-owned space and business frontages. Observations will be shared with the Town and businesses and available resources for improvements will be provided to businesses as needed. This initiative is a further experimentation in how the Town partners to fostering a vibrant Downtown.

Seasonal Cleaning Areas

The Seasonal Cleaning Initiative's has conducted the following audits:

  • April 2018: West Franklin Street, 200, 300 and 400 blocks: COMPLETE
  • July 2018:All of Rosemary and Franklin Streets: COMPLETE
  • November 2018: Franklin St. only: ONGOING
  • Early Spring 2019: Rosemary St. only
