Examining parking in Downtown is a key component of the Downtown Work Plan. The Town has multiple efforts underway to improve, adjust and enhance parking in Downtown:
|New parking meters||New parking meters are being installed consistent with Durham and Raleigh's downtown meters.||New meters installed Spring 2018
||Town employees previously engaged in monitoring parking decks and lots now serve as Downtown Ambassadors.
|Downtown Streets and Sidewalks Study||Phase 2 of this study includes an examination of the current parking environment and research on in lieu parking programs. Deliverables will include a current parking inventory, parking space utilization counts, and current and future demand recommendations.||Phases 1 and 2 are ongoing
|In lieu parking program research||The Planning Department is researching in lieu parking programs as a tool to further utilize to meet parking demand Downtown.||Ongoing|
|Property owner agreements||Ongoing relationship building and agreement negotiations with property owners and UNC to increase shared parking in Downtown. One example is The Central (formerly CVS) parking deck at 125 E. Rosemary St.
|Wallace Deck renovations||Examining opportunities within the Wallace Deck for upgrades and expansion.||Pending|
|Amber Alley signage experiment||Add pedestrian level art signage to test whether this assists pedestrian navigating between the Wallace Deck and E. Franklin St. through Amber Alley.||Signs installed December, 2017; evaluation in progress|
