Community Oriented PolicingCommunity Policing is based on the concept that police officers and private citizens work together in creative ways to help solve contemporary community problems related to crime, fear of crime, social and physical disorder, and neighborhood decay. Achieving these goals requires that the Police Department develop new relationships with the law abiding residents in the community. This allows them a greater voice in setting local priorities, and involving them in efforts to improve the overall quality of life in their neighborhoods. It shifts the focus of police work from handling random calls to solving problems.

Neighborhood Night Out is a program that focuses on crime and drug abuse prevention each August sponsored by the Town of Chapel Hill. The event brings citizens and police together to strengthen neighborhood spirit and fostor partnerships for safer communities.
