A new fitness course has been installed along the greenway in Southern Community Park, thanks to a collaboration among the Town of Chapel Hill and Southern Village, including contributions from Market Street Association, Southern Village Homeowners Association,
The course includes the following equipment by
Doubles Pull Up Bars
Muscle Focus: Biceps, Triceps, Shoulders, Chest and Back
Training: A traditional piece of fitness equipment, which is great for pull-ups and hanging in place to stretch.
Muscle Focus: Arms and Shoulders
Training: Grip both handles firmly. Begin by moving one hand forward and pulling the other toward you. Continue at a comfortable pace.
Muscle Focus: Triceps, Biceps, Shoulders, Chest and Core
Training: This multi-purpose product can be used for tricep dips and push-ups.
Lat Pull Down
Muscle Focus: Back, Shoulders and Biceps
Training: This will help strengthen your back, rear shoulders, and biceps.
Muscle Focus: Chest, Triceps and Shoulders
Training: Provides an optimal range of motion while you press out and lift part of your body weight as resistance.
Double Leg Press
Muscle Focus: Strengthens Leg muscles (particularly Quadriceps and Calves), as well as Gluteus Maximus
Training: Stretching legs with force and recover slowly. Repeat. An important workout for developing leg strength,
Muscle Focus: Upper Back, Lower Back, Shoulders, and Biceps
Training: Using a portion of your body weight as resistance, this machine helps develop strength in your back, shoulders and biceps, while giving a great cardio workout.
Sit Up Bench
Muscle Focus: Core and Back
Training: Improve the strength of the abdominal muscles, as well as the flexor muscles of the hip and upper thigh.
Muscle Focus: Lower Body, including Hips, Glutueus Maximus and Quadriceps
Training: A great low-impact cardio workout that improves flexibility of hip muscles and hamstrings

Training: Develop strength in the legs and hips, while improving cardiovascular endurance.

The outdoor fitness course on the Fan Branch Trail is currently open for public use.
Each piece of equipment is designed to be unique from the other, and is highlighted by its placement in the natural setting of the greenway.
The equipment can be used in a variety of ways by adults and children of all ages. Everyone in the community is encouraged to use the new fitness course.
