Carrboro metal artist Leo Gaev created artistic steel mesh railings that span a 162-foot bridge on the Tanyard Branch Trail that connects Umstead Park with the Northside neighborhood. The railings feature 43 steel silhouettes of neighborhood residents served by the trail. The art, like the bridge, connects the park, trail and the community. The silhouettes are derived from photographs taken by the artist of people walking the trail, enjoying the park and going about their daily lives in the Northside neighborhood.
The bridge and railing were completed in the summer of 2018, and a public dedication was held October 20, 2018.
