Puppet Partners was the 2016-17 Artist in Residence Program sponsored by the Town of Chapel Hill. Master Puppeteer Donovan Zimmerman, founding member of the Paperhand Puppet Intervention, instructed eleven Chapel Hill/Carrboro City School System elementary school art teachers in creating imaginative rod puppets out of newspaper, masking tape, wheat paste and paint.
The teachers took their new puppetry skills back to the classroom, where they taught their students the art of puppet making. Different classes produced various puppet types. The students crafted gigantic figures, cut out and flat shadow puppets, miniature puppets on popsicle sticks and rod puppets.
A selection of 80 of nearly 1,000 of these student-made puppets, along with their teachers' artworks, were then exhibited at Kidzu Children's Museum in the spring of 2017. A slide show featuring another 220 puppets created by the students was also a part of the exhibition, as well the puppets created by the teachers themselves.
