The Town of Chapel Hill is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to help mitigate the effects of climate change. About 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States are produced by the transportation sector. Electric vehicles serve as a clean alternative to conventional fossil-fuel powered vehicles.
Charging stations are available to the public and currently free of charge at the following locations:
Homestead Aquatic Center - Town Pilot Project (300 Aquatic Drive) - 2 available.
140 West Franklin - Town Pilot Project - Located in the public parking level (P-1) of the underground garage - entrance is located at 201 West Rosemary Street) - Four available - Note: Parking in the garage is $1/hour.
Orange County Skills Development Center - (503 West Franklin Street) - Four available, plus one Level 3 DC fast charge station (CHAdeMO and SAE COMBO, $12/hr and $1 minimum)
Robert and Pearl Seymour Senior Center - (2551 Homestead Road) - Two available
Park & Ride facility next to the Orange County Campus of Durham Technical Community College (525 College Park Road, Hillsborough, NC) - Six available
Unless otherwise noted, the charging stations located listed above are "Level 2" charging stations capable of fully energizing an electric car (such as the Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf) in about 3 to 6 hours, depending on the vehicle.
The Town of Chapel Hill offers same-day permitting for residential installations of electric vehicle charging stations. In most instances, this allows a licensed installer to apply for and receive an electrical permit within a 24-hour period.
