Reduced Weekday Routes and Schedules

Starting June 1, Chapel Hill Transit will begin running select weekday routes and schedules. This decision was made in conjunction with the Chapel Hill Transit partners, based on data and guidance from Orange County Public Health and the Town of Chapel Hill Emergency Management team.

Chapel Hill Transit is running reduced service to ensure that our team is able to provide a consistent and reliable level of service and keep our vehicles cleaned and sanitized for our customers and operators.

Our team continue to monitor this situation and will make adjustments to transit service levels as data and projections continue to improve.

“We understand that many people depend on Chapel Hill Transit for access to work, medical appointments, grocery stores and other essential services,” says Brian Litchfield, transit director. Our priority is to ensure we provide safe service for both our customers and our operators. We are eager to return our services to normal and see all of customers again. Please continue to be patient as begin reopening our community safely and responsibly.

We hope to restore regular service as soon as possible. Reduced weekday service will run until 8 p.m. and will include:

The weekday NU route will not run. The weekend NU and U routes will not run. The routes that are running provide the greatest amount of coverage in the community while allowing access to many of our park and ride lots and provide our most popular trips.

Running reduced service helps our operations team maintain flexibility so that we can provide reliable service, even as our operators cope with continued impacts of COVID-19 in their personal lives. Additional safety measures will be put into place including:

  • Rear door boarding:
Customers will only be able to board from the rear door, unless you have a mobility aid or other device (wheelchairs, strollers, etc.), and
  • Strict enforcement of the standee line:
the yellow line that all customers must stand behind while the bus is in motion
  • Maximum capacity capped at ten customers
Only ten customers will be allowed on our regular vehicles. We are still evaluating the capacity of our bigger "articulated" vehicles.
  • Face coverings are required
Face coverings are required in public spaces, including transit buses in Orange County and the Town of Chapel Hill. Face coverings help reduce the risk of people affecting those around them.
A mask is not required if:
       • You are under the age of 12
       • Your religious beliefs prevent wearing face coverings
       • You have a medical or behavioral condition that prevents wearing face coverings
       • You are complying with the directions of a law enforcement officer
  • Social distancing
Chapel Hill Transit will place signage on seating that promotes at least six feet of distance between customers. These restrictions will not apply to families or members of the same household.

Chapel Hill Transit administrative offices will continue to be closed to the general public. Lost and found will be available by appointment. Call 919.969.4901 to speak with staff during this time.

Chapel Hill Transit is committed to safety. We have hired additional staff to support cleaning of vehicles and equipment and have increased our cleaning regimen so that our buses are cleaned and disinfected daily.

During this time, please take advantage of less crowded buses and practice social distancing, maintaining at least six feet of distance between yourself, other customers and the operator. If you are able, arrive at your bus stop earlier to allow yourself options if the bus you are attempting to catch is more full than you are comfortable.
