Special Emergency Response Team

SERT EmblemFounded in 1979, the Special Emergency Response Team is a unit of the Police Department that is trained to respond to a variety of critical situations. Specialized tactics and intense training enable this unit to effectively respond to many different types of situations to ensure the safety of our community. SERT is made up of officers who volunteer to be part of the team in addition to their regularly assigned duties.

The mission of the Special Emergency Response Team is to support the Chapel Hill Police Department and other law enforcement agencies with an organized tactical response to critical incidents. Critical incidents are defined as follows:

  • Special Emergency Response TeamHigh Risk Apprehension

  • Warrant Service

  • Hostage/Barricade Situations
