🛹 A New Era for Homestead Skate Park

🏛️ Skate Park Renovation begins August 18, 2025

Park will close August 4, 2025

Celebrating 25 years of skate culture in Chapel Hill, the Homestead Park Skatepark is getting a major upgrade.

The town is changing the old wood-frame ramps into a strong, modern facility made from steel-reinforced concrete.

The redesign honors the park’s legacy while ushering in a new era for skaters of all levels.

Keeping much of the original layout, the new park blends street and transition elements to support various skating styles and skill levels. Features will include dedicated areas for beginners and intermediates, along with new rails, quarter pipes, banks, and ledges.

🤝 Built by Skaters, for Skaters

Homestead Skate Park Rendering 2024 2

The Town partnered with Fifth Pocket Skateparks to engage the community and develop the design. The skater-owned and run company has worked on parks in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

They've also worked on the new Cates Creek Skate Skate Park in Hillsborough. Jesse Clayton, one of the firm’s owners, says they “strive to offer economical alternatives to prefab parks while not compromising quality and creativity.”

In two public meetings, Fifth Pocket heard from

40 local skaters of all ages, as well as some rollerbladers and other wheeled sport enthusiasts.

Clayton says, “If the new design looks familiar, that’s because it is. We heard loud and clear that the local skate community wants to preserve the spirit of this historic park, while making some upgrades and adding some modern touches.”

The design phase of the project was funded with $12,000 from the Town’s “Penny for Parks” allocation that dedicates funding to a range of improvement projects. For the construction phase, the Town will use $500,000 of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.

Atuya Cornwell, Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Director, says, “We are excited to move this project forward by leveraging both local and federal funding to create a new amenity that honors the past while making improvements for present and future skaters.”

August 2024 Update

The project to redesign and renovate the Town’s skatepark at Homestead Park is moving ahead. This week, Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation staff are sharing renderings and requesting construction bids. The Town expects construction to begin in mid- to late-2025.

The new design retains much of the original aesthetic of the skatepark, focusing on a blend of street and transition elements that cater to a variety of skating styles and skill levels.  The design includes spaces for both beginner and intermediate skaters and a variety of elements, including rails, quarter pipes, banks, and ledges.  The new skatepark will be built with steel-reinforced concrete to replace the current wood-framed ramps.

December 2023: Public Input Sessions

Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Homestead Aquatic Center
Monday, Dec. 18, 2023 at 6 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Public Library, Meeting Room B

5th Pocket Skateparks, a skatepark design build company, joined Parks and Recreation staff to discuss the redesign project and hear feedback directly from the public.  We heard from community members involved in all types of wheeled sports like skateboarding, scootering, rollerblading, and freestyle BMX.

The two public input sessions were intended to be interactive, relaxed, open conversations about what types of features and amenities may be included in the re-imagined skate park.

We collected thoughts like this Skate Park Design Questionnaire.

In March 2023, the Town Council approved American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding in the amount of $500,000 to be allocated for the skate park upgrade project.
