“We began noticing more calls, emails and people looking for the CW route,” said Brian Litchfield, transit director. “As our team looked at transit access, we saw a number of people who needed access to downtown Carrboro, grocery stores and other important services – which prompted us to find the best solutions provide that access.”

“Working with our operations team, we saw that we would be able to provide that service while maintaining the rest of our reduced schedule,” reported Nick Pittman, planning manager.

Chapel Hill Transit continues to run a reduced schedule during the pandemic and Orange County’s state of emergency. The CW route joins the CM, D, G, J, NS, RU, S, and U routes as the only routes running under the reduced schedule.

Chapel Hill Transit does not have a date for the return of full service. Chapel Hill Transit continues to invest in new technologies to aid in cleaning and sanitizing vehicles; making improvements to their facilities to accommodate the number of operators needed to run full service; and developing solutions to help protect operators and customers, including mapping out physically distanced seats on buses and installing mask dispensers created by the maintenance team.

Chapel Hill Transit is planning to implement several improvements to transit service in early August.

“These improvements will simplify routing for several of our more complicated routes, add additional service on some routes that experience high demand and new weekend service on Saturday and Sunday,” says Pittman.

"Even though COVID-19 may delay some of these improvements, we are excited to finally be implementing some of these changes, including providing Sunday service to our communities for the first time in 40 years," says Litchfield.
