The Town of Chapel Hill will begin providing modified weekly yard waste collection to residents beginning Thursday, June 4. Yard waste must be in Town yard waste carts, rigid containers, or paper yard waste bags. We expect the yard waste collection volume to be larger than normal, and it may take a couple of weeks for collections to be completed. Place your yard waste in its container at the curb by 6 a.m. on your typical yard waste collection day starting on June 4 and leave it out until it is collected. The Town will evaluate this modified service for at least two weeks to determine procedures for future yard waste collection services. You can also consider home composting of yard waste. For more information about composting, visit orangecountync.gov/1150/Compost-at-Home.
The crews collecting yard waste are working as teams of three people that can’t physically distance at all times. To help reduce their exposures, we are working to minimize the time these crews will be working together. To do this, they will only be collecting yard waste in containers (i.e., carts, cans, and paper bags), and these crews will not be collecting loose yard waste piles at this time. The Town is continuing to rent yard waste dumpsters and provide knuckle-boom truck collections as these operations only require one operator, allowing for proper physical distancing. For information about our services for large yard waste projects, visit townofchapelhill.org/trash.
Bulky item collections (e.g., furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, etc.) remain suspended at this time.
If using a personal yard waste container, ensure that it is no larger than 32-gallons and weighs less than 60 pounds when full.
Don’t place yard waste in plastic bags; use paper bags. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.
All yard waste must be behind the curb or street side for collection.
If possible, sanitize the handles and lids of carts and cans after rolling them to the curb.
Trash Collection Reminder
Also, dispose of all household trash inside a tied trash bag and place it inside a trash container. This includes extra trash that won’t fit into your trash cart or can. Collection workers have been instructed not to collect trash that is unbagged or not inside a trash container for their safety and in compliance with Town Code. The Town provides one trash cart at no charge. Additional trash carts may be purchased for $60 and will be delivered to your home. To purchase a Town trash cart, townhall.townofchapelhill.org/seeclickfix/requests/garbage_rollcarts/.
As a reminder, May 25 is a Town Holiday that will impact trash collection. If your household trash is typically collected on Mondays, it will be collected on Wednesday, May 27.
Thank you for your continued patience as we work to provide services in a manner that keeps our workers and the community safe.
