Orange County Health Department Announces First Cases of COVID-19 in County

Post Date:03/20/2020 10:14 AM

SEAL_350The Orange County Health Department announced Friday, March 20, the first presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Orange County. Information about the patients will not be shared due to privacy laws.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Orange County residents who have been afflicted with the coronavirus. We wish them a full and speedy recovery,” said Mayor Pam Hemminger. “The fact that COVID-19 has reached Orange County is not a surprise and serves as a reminder of the steps all of us can take to combat the spread of the coronavirus including self-isolating if you can. Despite early assumptions about the virus, we now know that everyone is at risk of contracting COVID-19 and contributing to the spread of the virus. So we continue to encourage all residents to take the proper precautions to help keep everyone as safe as possible.”

Health professionals have shared the following to help prevent the spread of the disease:

  • Stay home and away from others, especially if you are sick or think you may have been exposed. Try not to take unnecessary trips outside of your home;
    • All town-sponsored events are canceled until further notice to help prevent the spread; we’re encouraging community organizations to do the same;;
  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water;
  • If you do not have access to soap, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can be used;
  • Avoid touching your face;
  • Practice social distancing by staying at least six feet away from people, especially if they are sick;
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, or into your elbow if a tissue is not available.

In an effort to help curb the spread of the virus, the Town of Chapel Hill has adjusted some services to help promote social distancing. Please visit townofchapelhill.org/coronavirus for the latest changes to services and helpful health tips and information.
