Mayor’s Message to Community on Coronavirus Situation

Post Date:03/11/2020 4:30 PM

PAM HEMMINGERDear Chapel Hill Friends and Neighbors,

Recent news about confirmed cases of coronavirus in North Carolina has been raising questions throughout Chapel Hill about the potential impacts on our community. I am writing to share the things that the Town of Chapel Hill is doing and to provide you with information about steps we can take to care for ourselves and one another.

The best way to keep our community healthy are to stay informed, avoid close contact and wash your hands frequently.

Current Coronavirus Situation

Governor Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina. This is a proactive step that will allow the state greater flexibility and access to funds and resources for responding to the outbreak and preventing the spread of the virus.

In preparing for this situation, UNC Health and other healthcare providers across North Carolina have been harnessing their expertise and experience to have plans in place for dealing with new cases of the virus.

As of today, there are seven positive cases of coronavirus in North Carolina. The World Health Organization has designated COVID-19 as a global pandemic.

What We Are Doing Locally

For our part, the Town of Chapel Hill is working diligently to take extra measures to help keep our entire community informed and to prevent the spread of the virus as well. Some of the steps we have taken include:

  • Taking additional steps to clean Chapel Hill Transit buses, public facilities and common spaces
  • Restocking and ordering additional sanitizers, dispensers, and personal protective equipment
  • Reviewing information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Orange County Health Department, the NC Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Attending frequent executive and health department briefings from NC Department of Health and Human Services and Orange County Health Department
  • Communicating closely with residents of Chapel Hill Public Housing communities
  • Providing information for high-risk groups, including older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions. Guidance available at
  • Training emergency response personnel regarding response protocols and protections
  • Distributing information to employees
  • Distributing information from health authorities through and through social media

At this time, the Town of Chapel Hill is maintaining existing service levels. However, this is a rapidly changing situation, so if factors change or worsen, cancelations or closures are a possibility. Consistent with guidance from the NC Department of Health and Human Services, we encourage community members with underlying health conditions and older adults to consider avoiding attending public events and visiting high traffic facilities.
