Chapel Hill Police Investigating Fatal Motor-Vehicle Collision

UPDATE (9/30/2019 11 AM): Jacob Rudd, 18, of Morrisville, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019, when his motorcycle collided with an SUV just before 2:39 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The names of the people in the SUV are not being released at this time.

“We’d like to thank everyone who jumped in to help immediately following the crash,” said Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue. “Brave individuals assisted the people involved, including administering CPR and first aid. Many people remained on scene until they were able to provide eyewitness accounts to officers. And businesses in the area provided food and water for first responders who were on the scene for multiple hours in the heat of the day.”

Previously released: The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a fatal two-motor-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2019.

The police and fire departments were dispatched to the intersection of West Franklin and Mallette streets at 2:39 p.m. The person driving the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the SUV, the driver and a passenger, were transported to UNC Hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Franklin Street was closed between Church and Kenan streets for about three and a half hours.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. No additional information is available at this time and will be released when available.
