Town of Chapel Hill Wins National Award for Hurricane Florence Communication
DENVER – The City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA) announced the 2019 winners of its national Savvy Awards Competition during a ceremony at the Hilton Denver City Center on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The Town of Chapel Hill earned an Award of Excellence in the category Communication or Marketing Plans for Hurricane Florence Communication.
Judges’ Comments Excerpt: “Outstanding. Excellence applied at every communication level.”
Entry Excerpt: An historic hurricane is pointing at your community. It’s forecast to stall and dump record amounts of rain in a town prone to flooding. What to do? EVERYTHING. Use every tool in your emergency communication toolbox from Facebook Alerts to translations and a Call Center – and, get help from partners.
Background: In September 2018, Hurricane Florence brought more than nine inches of rain over four days to Chapel Hill. Since then, Town of Chapel Hill staff have used what was learned to prepare for hurricanes, winter storms, and other emergencies. We will continue to improve and adapt our emergency communication toolbox to promote safety and preparedness for our residents and visitors. Our public communications efforts are led by Emergency Management, Police and Fire, with support from Communications and Public Affairs.
About the Savvy Awards
The Savvy Awards, held in conjunction with 3CMA’s Annual Conference, recognize outstanding local government achievements in communications, public-sector marketing and citizen-government relationships. The Savvies salute skilled and effective city, county, agency or district professionals who have creatively planned and carried out successful innovations in communications and marketing. 3CMA accommodates local government organizations of all sizes and budget classes by judging entries in several different population groups. Over 700 entries in 40 categories were received. 3CMA utilized volunteer judges from across the United States to review every entry and provide constructive comments on the winning entries. 72 first-place Savvy Awards were presented. 72 second-place Silver Circle Awards and 73 third-place Awards of Excellence were also presented.
