Update on Lockdown at Culbreth Middle School
On Thursday, Sept. 5 at 12:18 p.m., Chapel Hill Police officers responded to the area of Fan Branch Lane due to a report of a subject wearing a mask and possibly carrying a firearm near Culbreth Middle School.
This report came in as students were being released due to the hurricane. Culbreth was placed on lockdown until officers could identify the individual and determine that no threat was present and that, instead, the individual had been removing personal belongings from a vehicle and put the mask on rather than carrying it. There was no firearm involved and it was determined that there was no threat to the school or neighborhood at any time.
Officers remained at the school to assist with student release and traffic management due to the congestion created by the lock down.
If there was an active and ongoing threat, school system and Town of Chapel Hill communication channels would be utilized to inform parents and people in the community of actions needed to be taken.
