Fairies are everywhere but rarely seen by us. They’re magical creatures. On very special occasions, they appear to humans to celebrate life, happiness and nature.
Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is creating that special occasion! You’re invited to celebrate everything whimsical and magical at the new Magical Hill Festival to be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Community Center Park, 120 S. Estes Drive. The festival will feature food trucks, arts, crafts, and more!
Patrons big and small are invited to help us get ready for our magical festival by building “fairy dwellings” for our special guests! The Fairy House Competition is officially underway, so get busy building! Please see competition rules and information below.
The theme of the house may be anything you wish. We encourage you to use natural and recycled materials.
Platforms or man-made support materials can be used for easier delivery and transport, but must be concealed with natural materials when installed on-site. Your platform is included as part of your fairy house size. Houses should be tabletop size and portable (maximum dimensions 2ft wide x 2ft long x 2ft high); please use a sturdy base that can hold up if wet (such as plywood).
Please do not use any items of value in the houses as Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is not responsible for any loss or damage to your fairy or gnome structure.
Contest Categories include:
Family (Children up to age 11); Youth (12-17); and Adult (18 and older)
Prizes will be awarded in each category and include:
Overall Best in Category, Most Creative, and Most Enchanting with a grand prize for “Best in Show”
Winners will be announced at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, and will remain on display at the Homestead Aquatic Center through the end of October.
Installation and Delivery: Bring your completed house and application to the Chapel Hill Community Center on Friday, Sept. 20, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
