The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued an excessive heat warning for our area from 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, through 6 a.m. Sunday, July 21. An excessive heat warning means dangerously-high temperatures will be present for an extended time.

Please remember the following important steps during such conditions:

  1. Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water
  2. Limit your time outdoors, especially in the middle of the day (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
    • Do not use electric fans alone for self cooling when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature.
  3. Don’t leave people or pets in cars: temperatures in an idle car can reach or exceed 120 degrees
  4. Check on your neighbor: make sure they’ve received this message and have appropriate resources

Cooling Centers are facilities opened to provide a cool reprieve from extreme temperatures. They are not shelters or designed for overnight stays.

The Chapel Hill Public Library (see times below) will have only the lobby, meeting rooms, and bathroom facilities accessible outside of normal business hours. They will be screening movies throughout the day.
