The Chapel Hill Fire Department was dispatched at 1:43 p.m. to 79 S. Elliott Road to investigate smoke that was seen by construction workers at the Cava restaurant.

No injuries were reported.

Upon arrival, light smoke was seen on an elevated portion of the structure. Five Chapel Hill Fire Department units were staged in the Village Plaza shopping center until 2:20 p.m. when the source of the smoke was confirmed to be isolated to a small area. Two units remained on scene to ensure there was no ongoing threat.

A few businesses in the Village Plaza shopping center were evacuated out of the abundance of caution while firefighters investigated.

The Chapel Hill Police Department assisted with evacuations and traffic control in the parking lot. Orange County Emergency Services was on scene to provide assistance if it became necessary.
