Tips for Cyber Security During the Holidays

Post Date:12/01/2018 11:30 AM

Cyber security should always be taken seriously, especially during the holiday months. Don’t let someone take advantage of you! Here are a few tips to keep in mind for email safety.

  • Never open an attachment or click on a link within an email from a company or person you don't know or that you were not expecting.
  • If the sender of the email message is not known to you, do not click on the link or open the attachment.
  • If the sender is known but you are not expecting the sender to send an attachment or link, confirm with the sender, if possible, prior to clicking or opening the attachment.
  • Avoid sending any sensitive information over email.
  • Bad actors will use the holiday season or current events to entice you to click on an email or open an attachment. Examples include an email with an attachment from one of the major carriers such as the U.S. Post Office, UPS or FedEx. The email typically states that they could not deliver a package for you and request that you open the attachment or click the link for details. Other attempts include email messages that appear to be from the IRS concerning your tax return or a message stating it’s from IT support or the Help Desk. Most all of these email messages will contain a link or attachment and ask you to perform an action such as clicking the link or opening the attachment.
