Chapel Hill Transit Kicks Off Open House Events for North South Bus Rapid Transit

Post Date:10/01/2018 4:51 PM
CHAPEL HILL TRANSIT BUS

Chapel Hill Transit is holding open house events this October to gain feedback from transit users, residents and business owners on phase two of its North-South Bus Rapid Transit (NSBRT) project. The NSBRT www.nsbrt.org will provide service along the thoroughfare that stretches from Eubanks Road in the north to Southern Village.

“With the launch of bus rapid transit along one of Chapel Hill’s busiest corridors, we will be able to provide riders with faster, more efficient public transportation, alleviate congestion on roadways and reduce pollution,” said Brian Litchfield, transit director for Chapel Hill Transit.

Earlier this year, Chapel Hill Transit launched Phase Two of the project using findings from the 2016 North South Transit Study to kick off the environmental study and 30 percent design of the NSBRT.

The study identified one locally-preferred alternative with three options at the northern end of the route, as well as priorities for the project, which include high-capacity buses with exclusive bus lanes, traffic signal priority and level boarding to improve the customer experience. Another priority for the project: multi-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

Public Invited to Comment on Early Design Considerations

The open house will provide transit users, residents and commuters with an opportunity to view the team’s recommendation for the preliminary design of the NSBRT system, as well as to view and provide feedback on alternatives for bike and pedestrian pathways.

“Public engagement was crucial to our study findings,” Litchfield said. “It will be equally important in Phase Two. The open house events are a great opportunity for the public to provide feedback on project elements including the recommended location of the NSBRT lanes, bus station locations and bike and pedestrian paths.”

Public feedback will be used to develop the design recommendation the project team will take to the Chapel Hill Town Council this fall.
