Tar Heel Downtown Canceled
UPDATE 9/11/2018: Due to expected inclement weather, Tar Heel Downtown is canceled.
Football season is here and the Tar Heel game day spirit is coming to the heart of downtown Chapel Hill.
The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, UNC Athletics and the Town of Chapel Hill will kick off the home season with Tar Heel Downtown from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 on the Plaza at 140 West Franklin St. Taking place the Friday before the home season opening game against the Central Florida Knights, this once-a-year event captures the spark of excitement and lights it aflame when the UNC Marching Tar Heels, cheerleaders and Rameses himself take to the streets in a flurry of blue and white.
Tar Heel Downtown is a fan experience and pep rally on Franklin Street. In addition to the marching band, cheerleaders and beloved mascot, it features a live outdoor concert with the southern sounds of Brooke McBride, interactive games for kids and families, face painting and more. Drop in or hang out; parking is available at Rosemary Street parking decks.
“Carolina football allows us to come together and celebrate all that makes this Town and this University so special,” says Bubba Cunningham, UNC Director of Athletics. “Tar Heel Downtown will offer our students, alumni and fans an unforgettable community experience stretching from Franklin Street to Kenan Stadium.”
