Reconstruction of Friday Center Drive to Begin Aug. 13
Traffic impacts to begin Aug. 20
A contractor for the Town of Chapel Hill will begin the approximately $900,000 jointly-funded reconstruction project of Friday Center Drive Monday, Aug. 13. The project is being funded by federal Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) grant funds, UNC-Chapel Hill funding, and a combination of the Town’s general fund and 2015 Streets and Sidewalks bond funds.
Reconstruction will take place from N.C. Highway 54 to just south of the entrance to the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education (where the road transitions from four lanes to two).
The reconstruction consists of replacing poor foundation below the riding surface, installing a five-to-six-foot bike lane, and ADA improvements along the road.
The schedule is dependent on favorable weather and is tentatively scheduled to take around three months to complete.
Week One Impacts
The contractor will begin with off-street work: installing silt fencing, deconstructing some off-street infrastructure like curb and gutter, and installing lane shift markings.
Work will be suspended for UNC-Chapel Hill move-in weekend beginning Friday, Aug. 17.
Traffic Impacts Beginning Aug. 20
No road closures will take place during this project. For the majority of the project, traffic will be reduced to one lane in either direction utilizing lane shifts. Signage will direct people who travel through the intersection and along Friday Center Drive. We appreciate the community’s patience during this highly-anticipated project to make traveling through this busy area safer and easier.
Chapel Hill Transit
The FCX and V routes will enter and exit the Friday Center Park and Ride through Meadowmont Exchange and will not serve the standalone bus stops on Friday Center Drive beginning Aug. 20. The S and HU routes will not be able to directly serve the Friday Center Park and Ride, and the stops near the Friday Center will be temporarily relocated beyond the entrance to the conference center’s parking lot.
Chapel Hill Transit will make every effort to operate on a normal schedule, however the FCX, HU, S and V routes may experience schedule delays during this phase of the project.
