Project Overview on the Future Land Use Map

Post Date:12/06/2017 3:03 PM

Volunteers serving on Town of Chapel Hill boards and commissions received a project overview of the Future Land Use Map on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at Chapel Hill Town Hall.

A Future Land Use Map is the town’s visual guide to future planning, and it graphically depicts the Town’s goals for its built environment.

The Town Council initiated the project to rewrite the Town’s Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO) in April 2017. The three-year project begins with the refinement of the Town’s Future Land Use Map, a component of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. On Nov. 29, 2017, the Council received a report and endorsed a process to refine the map with community engagement. (See #15 at

Engagement will begin with a launch event in February 2018 to inform the community of the Future Land Use Map Refinement Process. Beginning in March 2018, the community will be asked to react to various scenarios through open meetings, stakeholder focus groups and targeted outreach to those traditionally under-represented in community meetings.

Thanks to all who attended Tuesday’s project overview representing the Board of Adjustment, Community Design Commission, Environmental Stewardship Advisory Board, Historic District Commission, Housing Advisory Board, Planning Commission, and Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board.
