A Message from Mayor Pam Hemminger

While OWASA water levels remain below-normal and the effects of the water shortage linger, we wish to thank those who have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of our community during this event.
  • Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County residents and business owners for their immediate response to this crisis, for their patience as we worked to resolve the situation and for their generosity towards one another; 
  • The Town of Chapel Hill’s Emergency Management Team and our entire staff, headed by Coordinator Barry McLamb, Fire Chief Matt Sullivan and Police Chief Chris Blue, who took the lead in coordinating all aspects of the Town’s response;
  • The City of Durham, Town of Hillsborough and Chatham County for providing water to help replenish our diminished supply;
  • Our community partners, especially Harris Teeter and the American Red Cross, who donated and made water available to the 83,000 residents that were impacted; and
  • Our partners from OWASA, Orange County, the Orange County Health Department, UNC-Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro, the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitor's Bureau.
Everyone continues to work to resolve the situation completely and will be de-briefing to identify the lessons learned from this situation.
We know this had a significant impact on local businesses and encourage everyone to support them by dining and shopping locally.
And finally, we wish to remind everyone that we remain under a conservation order and ask that you restrict water to essential uses until OWASA water levels have been replenished.
