Near & Far

A Local Celebration of Global Culture

Near-Far_Wordmark+FlowerChapel Hill attracts residents from around the world. In fact, more than 16% of the town’s residents were born in a foreign country. Near & Far, A Local Celebration of Global Cultures is a downtown festival that recognizes our community’s diversity in a fun and carefree way. On Sunday, April 28 from 1:00-5:00, live performances, cultural exchanges, and food with an international flair will take over the plaza at 140 West Franklin Street.

Now in its second year, the free and family-friendly event lets people of all ages to learn new songs and dances, old traditions, and get a taste of flavors from around the world. A main stage will showcase our community’s roots in global culture with performances that feature African drumming, classical Indian dance, Latin American culture and more. Between shows, dozens of exhibitors will teach traditional crafts, games and more.

In one afternoon, families can learn to make African soccer balls, Ukrainian charm dolls, or Peking opera masks; they can grab a bite from three food trucks, then try their hand at Arabic calligraphy or painting on deer hide.

Near & Far is sponsored by Town of Chapel Hill’s Community Arts & Culture and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership.

Parking on Sundays in downtown Chapel Hill is free as well.
