  • Introduction: An art railing has been installed on a pedestrian bridge on the Tanyard Branch Trail that connects Umstead Park with the Northside neighborhood.

An art railing has been installed on a pedestrian bridge on the Tanyard Branch Trail that connects Umstead Park with the Northside neighborhood. A dedication ceremony open to the public will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the bridge site.

Parking is available at Umstead Park, 399 Umstead Drive. Participants can walk about 1,000 feet from Umstead Park, on the paved trail, to reach the bridge. We invite everyone to join us.  If you have any special access or parking needs, please contact Jeff York at jyork@townofchapelhill.org or 919 -968-2750.

Created by artist and metal fabricator Leo Gaev, the bridge art features 43 silhouettes cut out of steel securely attached to perforated, steel panels that span both sides of the bridge.

The art, like the bridge, connects the park, trail and the community. The silhouettes are derived from photographs taken by the artist, of people walking the trail, enjoying the park or going about their daily lives throughout the Northside neighborhood.  There is a father pushing a stroller, people playing musical instruments, a carrier delivering mail, volleyball players, a boy running with a dog, a woman planting flowers, and other identifiable activities.

Leo Gaev’s Metal Work Inc., is located in Carrboro. Gaev has been designing, building, and installing architectural and artistic metalwork in the region for 10 years. He is known for his sculptural signs welcoming people to Carrboro. Gaev was chosen for the bridge railing commission through a broadly advertised “call to artists” and a selection process.

The bridge art was funded by the Town of Chapel Hill’s Percent for Art Program established in 2002. The ordinance allocates one percent of selected projects for the creation and maintenance of public art.  For information about the project, visit http://www.townofchapelhill.org/home/showdocument?id=37675.  For information about the Town’s Community Arts & Culture visit http://www.chapelhillarts.org
