Residential Parking Permit Renewal to begin on July 1st thru July 31st

Residents may apply in person at the Chapel Hill Police Department if they live on a street where parking permits are required. The fee for a residential parking permit is $25 per year. Please visit our Residential parking permit page for more information.  Fees will be waived for those age 65 or older (proof of age must be provided).

Guest permits are still available for short-term parking of 24 hours (1 day) or less in a given week within residential parking zones.  Also available are 3-day and 14-day Temporary Residential Visitor Parking Permits. Temporary Residential Permits are available with proof of residency. Up to 10 three-day permits may be purchased in a year for $2 each. Up to five 14-day permits may be purchased each year for $10 each..

Downtown Chapel Hill Just Got More Irresistible (Free On-Street Parking Available for July in Downtown Chapel Hill) 

On-street metered parking will be FREE on Saturdays in Downtown Chapel Hill during the month of July.

How will you know? About 200 parking meters will be bagged! These are all highly visible and desirable parking spaces with convenient access for residents and visitors to shop, dine and enjoy Downtown Chapel Hill.  Remember that the usual two-hour limit for metered parking will be in effect. And parking at Town decks and surface parking lots is not included in the freebie offering.

Responding to concerns expressed by businesses and other stakeholders about parking availability, the Town of Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership have worked together to design and propose the pilot program.

  3. Did we mention FREE? Free parking after 6 p.m. at all on-street meters and after 8 p.m. at off-street metered locations

  5. Looking for short-term parking? On-street spaces good for 30 minutes up to 2 hours

  6. Inexpensive! An hour of parking costs less than a cup of coffee!!

  7. Prefer valet? 18 businesses participate in FREE valet parking

  8. Need Monthly Parking? Monthly parking available in centrally located areas.

  9. Parking is friendly! Chapel Hill has issued over 26,400 “courtesy” tickets to first-time violators of expired meters.  “Hey, we don’t like to give tickets!”

  10. Discount anyone? Purchase parking vouchers for your business customers at Parking Services at Chapel Hill Police Department, 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. We have vouchers available for 140 West, Wallace, Rosemary/Columbia parking lots.

The primary mission of the Parking Services Division is to provide safe and efficient on-street and off-street parking to Chapel Hill’s citizens and visitors in a courteous manner.  Offer support and promote the vitality of downtown and areas served by public parking, and to operate a parking enforcement system in compliance with the parking regulations adopted by the Town Council.

Parking Services consists of On-Street and Off-Street operations and duties of the division include:

  • Parking Compliance and Enforcement of parking regulations 
  • Maintenance and repair of parking meters and pay stations 
  • Parking citation processing and adjudication 
  • Provide Residential and Commercial parking permits 
  • Management of the Town-owned parking deck and surface lots 
  • Special Event Parking 
  • Monthly Parking Rentals 
  • Merchant Validation Programs
