The Inspections Division, as a part of the Office of Planning and Sustainability, manages the inspections and permits. The main responsibilities of the Division include:

  • Enforcement of the NC State Building Codes, Chapel Hill Code of Ordinances, Minimum Housing Code, and the Land Use Management Ordinance.
  • Resolution associated complaints, public requests for assistance, issuing sign installation permits, inspecting day care facilities, and inspecting business occupancies.

    What areas do the Inspections Division cover?

    The Inspections Division provides services to all areas within town limits and to its extraterritorial jurisdiction. Specifically, the Division serves an area that terminates at the northern boundary of Chatham County and extends to the northern corporate boundary of Interstate I-40. The western boundary of the jurisdiction ends at Carrboro. The boundary extends easterly to I-40 and includes an annexed area of Durham County. All State and University of North Carolina properties are excluded.
