Background

On October 26, 2016, the Town of Chapel Hill Council established a committee to consider the possible future use of the Historic Town Hall facility as a visitors and history center, culminating with a report and recommendation to the Council anticipated in May 2017.On November 15, 2016 the Orange County Board of Commissioners authorized their participation in this committee.

Historic Town Hall was built in 1938 and is owned by the Town. The facility is currently occupied by the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services (IFC) Community Kitchen.

Committee Mission

Opportunity Statement: The Inter‐Faith Council for Social Services is proceeding with plans to vacate Historic Town Hall. A recommendation is needed regarding the future use and occupancy of this building.

Goal: A Historic Town Hall Committee will represent the interests of the Town of Chapel Hill and Orange County to consider the opportunity to renovate the Historic Town Hall building at 100 West Rosemary Street as a Visitor's Center, a History Center, or both for possible occupancy by the Chapel Hill and Orange County Visitor's Bureau, Chapel Hill Historical Society, and/ or Chapel Hill Museum.

On June 27, 2016, the Town received a petition regarding combining the Visitor's Center and Chapel Hill Museum at the Historic Town Hall facility. This committee will respond to the petition by considering the possibility of these uses for the Historic Town Hall facility.
