The mission of the Department of Housing is to provide decent, safe and affordable rental housing for Chapel Hill’s public housing families.

Our mission is also to provide programs and services to help public housing families improve basic life skills and achieve economic independence.

The Department provides affordable quality housing for families in need of assistance. The Department manages 336 public housing apartments in 13 neighborhoods throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Within these 13 neighborhoods, there are no satellite or on-site staff offices.

As a department of the Town of Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill Department of Housing is not an autonomous agency. Other Town departments, such as the Finance, Public Works, and Human Resources Departments, provide functions that support the overall public housing operation. As part of the Town of Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill Town Council serves as the governing authority for public housing operations.
