This area features many college-style and upscale restaurants and eateries, stores, boutiques, memorabilia shops, and bars, nightclubs and taverns. Numerous buildings feature murals on various subjects by local artist Michael Brown. In 1997, Sports Illustrated called Chapel Hill "the best college town in America". More than 250 businesses.

Raleigh Rd (NC Highway 54 East), Chapel Hill. Glen Lennox was Chapel Hill's first shopping center. More than 20 businesses.

Meadowmont Village (2001)
Meadowmont Village Cir, off Raleigh Rd (NC Highway 54 East), Chapel Hill. About 15 businesses.

Southern Village (1999)
Market St (off US Highway 15-501 South), Chapel Hill. About 20 businesses.

University Mall and Plaza (1973)
201 South Estes Dr (at Willow Dr), Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill's first enclosed mall. More than 60 businesses.

Village Plaza (1974), Gateway Commons (2000) and The Galleria (1992)
East Franklin St at South Elliott Rd, Chapel Hill. Village Plaza is actually four separate shopping centers. The six combined offer more than 40 businesses.
