Natural Selections Overview

Photographers are invited to apply for this juried competition & exhibition that will be on display from April 12 – May 30, 2010 at University Mall in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The theme of ecology was selected in honor of Earth Action Day (EAD), which seeks to celebrate and appreciate the Earth while acknowledging our human relationship to it. EAD recognizes the Earth’s resources are finite and therefore our behaviors should align with the Earth’s preservation. EAD seeks to explore alternative ways of living that reduce our footprint and in many cases eliminate our use of natural resources. For the purpose of this competition and exhibition, the term ecology is broad and encompasses living with nature, conservation, protection and preservation of resources, low ecological impact activities (hiking, biking, recycling, reuse), connections between the built and natural environment, human structures/settlements reclaimed by nature, green building, sustainability, etc. This invitation is extended to all individuals 18 years or older residing in Orange, Durham, Wake, Chatham and Alamance Counties of North Carolina. There is no entry fee. Selection for the exhibition and awards will be based on artistic quality and adherence to the ecological theme.

Photographic imagery submitted for consideration must have been produced within the last two years. All forms of photography including digital manipulation will be considered, but must be original. No photo-mechanical reproductions will be accepted.

Selection and Installation

An Artist Selection Committee comprising University Mall management staff and sponsoring merchants, representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local professional photographers will review all complete portfolios and select works for the Exhibition and the awards. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the adherence to the ecological theme.

Selected photographers will be notified as to a date and time for delivery by the Chapel Hill Public Arts Office. Selected artists will receive loan agreements and insurance paperwork to complete and return prior to the exhibition. University Mall will insure each work for the duration of the exhibition at a value agreed upon with the artist or determined by an independent appraiser.

Works selected for the exhibition must be delivered in person, matted, framed and ready to hang with a standard wire hanging devise on the back of the framed work.

Costs associated with transportation of the piece, travel of the artist, insurance during travel and removal of the work after the exhibition closes are the responsibility of the artist.

The jurors, University Mall management and the Town of Chapel Hill reserve the right to accept or deny any entry for any reason including, but not limited to, appropriateness for display in a family-friendly atmosphere.
