Chapel Hill Receives Public Official of the Year Award For Focus On Affordable Housing

Post Date:10/21/2014 10:49 AM
The Town of Chapel Hill Town Council was presented with the NC Housing Coalition's Public Official of the Year Award Thursday morning (Oct. 16) at the NC Affordable Housing Conference.

Council members Sally Greene and George Cianciolo accepted the award on behalf of the Town.

NC Housing Coalition Executive Director Santana Deberry praised the Town of Chapel Hill for its "work to prioritize allocation of a penny of the property tax rate toward support, creation, and preservation of affordable housing. "

On June 9, the Council adopted the 2014-15 budget. To address the community goal to improve affordable housing options, about $700,000 was set aside for such initiatives.

In tandem with recognizing the work of the Town Council, the coalition also recognized the Orange County Housing Coalition as Volunteer of the Year. The Coalition consists of area non-profit affordable housing organizations and advocates such as Habitat for Humanity, the Community Home Trust, Empowerment, Inc., CASA, IFC, the Jackson Center, and the Self-Help Credit Union that work together to advance affordable housing initiatives throughout the County.

The Town's newly established Office of Housing and Community, which includes the Town's Housing Department, the Human Services division from the Police Department, and the Housing and Neighborhood Services division from the Planning Department is responsible for managing the Town's affordable housing programs and policy initiatives. Specific action plans are in progress. Please visit the Housing and Community webpage for more information about the affordable housing initiatives underway:
