The Town of Chapel Hill Historic Civil Rights Commemorations Task Force wants
to hear from people who lived in Chapel Hill during the 1960s. All are invited
to tell stories of notable events, people and places during the Civil Rights
Era in Chapel Hill.

In fall 2017, Mayor Pam Hemminger created the Historic Civil Rights
Commemorations Task Force. Its purpose is to create a timeline that identifies
people, places and events that should be remembered for their part in the
African American struggle for civil rights in Chapel Hill, including the sit-in
at the Colonial Drugstore and the Lincoln High students whose actions ignited
the integration movement in Chapel Hill. This timeline should also tell the
story that Chapel Hill played in our nation’s civil rights movement.
