Winter Storm Inga Update
Chapel Hill is cleaning up after Winter Storm Inga dumped nearly a foot of snow on the town. High-traffic roads have been cleared, but icy spots remain.
Town facilities are open Friday. Chapel Hill Transit service is operating on a modified schedule.
Residential solid waste collection will resume normal schedules next week. Commercial solid waste collection will be made up Saturday. Yard waste collection, including leaf collection, is canceled this week. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday curbside recycling routes—collected by Orange County Solid Waste—will be collected Friday and Saturday.
Community Meeting on Municipal Services Center
The third community meeting to discuss a new Municipal Services Center off of Estes Drive Extension is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Phillips Middle School, 606 N. Estes Drive.
The agenda for the third meeting will include updates from the first two meetings along with a conversation on draft guiding principles, prepared by residents for this discussion.
The Town identified the need for a new Municipal Service facility and initiated an effort to identify potential sites that would meet the functional, operational, and location needs for several Town departments. The Town also recognized this as an opportunity to facilitate increased collaboration, shared training, operations, and public services for Town operations.
The Town tested the capacity of University-owned site on Estes Drive, recognizing that a coordinated effort could meet long-term interests for both the Town and the University. The site-test shows that there is a significant opportunity to develop a plan that respects the site constraints, the neighboring properties, and complements the planned Carolina North campus.
