Festifall Arts Festival: A Day of Discovery in Downtown Chapel Hill
The Town of Chapel Hill welcomed more than 18,000 residents and visitors to historic West Franklin Street in Downtown on Sunday, Oct. 1, to experience the Festifall Arts Festival.
The local arts festival celebrated its 45th year with more than 100 area artists setting up shop along the west end of Franklin Street. Shopping for art was only one of the activities available at Festifall. Visitors experienced live performances from local musicians, dance groups, an interactive mural, video game lounge, kids’ zone, photo booth, food trucks and more.
Festifall continues to be an extraordinary opportunity for the community and artists to interact in a full day of artful discovery. The festival roots date back to the early 70’s, following the efforts of a planning committee that visualized a festival that would bring whole families together to celebrate the talent of the community while strengthening the ties that often break when towns grow and expand.
Festifall Arts Festival has undergone significant branding and programmatic improvements over the past few years to incorporate more quality and interactive art on exhibit, engage more with local arts organizations, galleries, and artists, and focus on collaborative efforts with downtown stakeholders, beginning with downtown business owners, the University, our Downtown Partnership and the Visitors Bureau.
In 2011 the Americans for the Arts reported a significant economic impact and reports annual expenditures during event-related arts and culture of $8.2 million among residents and $13.2 million among visitors, and an average spending person of $14.91.
