SNOWPLOWWinter Storm Inga Update

Chapel Hill is cleaning up after Winter Storm Inga dumped more than 6 inches of snow on the town. Public Works crews are focusing on clearing Town-maintained streets, bridges, overpasses and trouble spots. The NC Department of Transportation is focusing on the five major roads through Chapel Hill (Franklin Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Columbia Street, Fordham Boulevard, Manning Drive, and South Road/NC Highway 54).

Meeting cancelations: Wednesday's Chapel Hill Town Council regular business meeting is canceled. Wednesday's Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission meeting is canceled. The Meet the Author Tea scheduled for Thursday has been canceled and may be rescheduled for a later date.

Town facilities will be closed on Thursday. This includes Parks and Recreation facilities (including the Aquatics Center on Homestead Road), the Chapel Hill Public Library and other public-facing facilities.

Chapel Hill Police Speed-Enforcement Initiatives

Travel with care and pay attention when driving, walking and biking.

As part of our ongoing effort to create and preserve a safe community in which to travel, the Chapel Hill Police Department and area partners will continue speed enforcement and Watch For Me N.C. initiatives throughout the month of July.

Officers may issue information, warnings or citations for anyone for violating laws. Fines and court costs for these violations begin at $213.

Multiple officers will monitor the following areas (in addition to normal Chapel Hill Police patrol practices) to encourage and enforce safe behavior from everyone:

  • 8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, US 15-501
  • 8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Hillsborough Street/Umstead Drive and Homestead Road
  • 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, West Rosemary Street and West Franklin Street

Watch For Me N.C. is a statewide safety initiative designed to improve relationships on roads between people who drive, people who walk, people who roll and people who bike. People may receive helpful information, warnings, and in some cases, tickets for violations during these initiatives.
