Post Date:05/17/2017 1:24 PM

The Chapel Hill Police Department responded at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, to a report of a traffic collision involving a motor vehicle striking two people who were walking. The crash occurred on West Rosemary Street in the crosswalk in front of Shortbread Lofts (333 West Rosemary Street).

The people who were walking, whose names are currently being withheld, were transported to the UNC Hospitals Emergency Room with serious injuries related to the crash.

The driver of the vehicle was cited with failure to reduce speed and failure to yield to a person in a crosswalk.

Distracted driving has been the cause of multiple accidents in this area. This stands as a reminder that all parties need to pay attention when traveling, regardless of the chosen mode of transportation. Limiting distractions, such as cell phone use and reaching for loose items, is key as transportation and the safety of those traveling is a shared responsibility. Keep your eyes on the road and your surroundings.
