LIGHTUP LANTERN FESTIVAL

The First Chapel Hill LIGHTUP Lantern Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, the Chinese New Year’s Day, at the University Place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Festival is hosted by the Chinese School at Chapel Hill to celebrate cultural diversity and the Chinese New Year with all communities in Chapel Hill and the surrounding areas.  The Festival features lantern decorating with local artists, highly interactive art and craft creations, a dragon dance workshop, Peking Opera, a Chinese orchestra and other live performances, old fashioned Chinese games, and authentic Chinese foods throughout the day.  The climax of the Festival occurs at dusk with a lantern light-up and a parade.  The event organizers expect thousands of visitors on the Festival Day to experience over 40 booths of cultural art activities and foods.  According to the Festival organizers, the main theme of the Festival is to “Light up blessing lanterns for the sharing of peace and happiness.”

This volunteer-organized LIGHTUP Lantern Festival has received enthusiastic support from the Town of Chapel Hill, the Orange County Tourist Bureau, the Confucius Institute at NC State, FRANK Gallery, RedApple Learning Campus, the Mandarin Dual Language Program at Glenwood Elementary, Kidzu Children’s Museum, the Chapel Hill Library, UNC and Duke Chinese Students and Scholars Associations, the Cary Chinese School, the Chapel Hill Chinese Language & Culture School, and local Chinese arts and performance clubs and associations.  Many local businesses have provided financial sponsorship for this Festival and a number of Chinese restaurants from the area are providing food services.  Four Chapel Hill public schools are participating in pre-festival lantern decoration activities and their lantern artwork will be featured in a silent auction on the Festival Day.  All proceeds from the auction will go back to the individual schools for future art projects.

Residents of all ages and cultural backgrounds are warmly welcomed to be part of this fantastic event!  For more information and further updates, please visit www.chlightup.org.
